After Brunei Darussalam, Australia & New Zealand, Indonesia hosted Invest Jakarta 2008 on 23rd October 2008. Held in Jakarta, the event was officially opened by Vice Governor of Jakarta Provincial Government. Opportunities in investing in Jakarta was elaborated in this half day seminar by Chairman of Jakarta Investment Board, Legal Expert, Vice Director of PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, Director of PT KBN (Persero) & President Director of PT Bank DKI and got insightful respond from the participants.

Background
Invest Jakarta 2008 is a forum organized by the Jakarta Investment Board. Participants will gain the latest information on investment potentials of the Jakarta area. The speakers are not only government officials but also successful Jakarta businesses looking for opportunities to partner with foreign direct investors. In addition to provide comprehensive information concerning investment opportunities, the forum also offers the chance to meet with those companies, i.e. property, banking, industrial estate and entertainment resort, on one-on-one basis.

- In 2007 DKI Jakarta province have strongest economic growth since 1998, with growth rate of 6.04%
- Investment also soaring over the last years, with foreign investment in 2006 : US$ 2.635 billion compare with 2007 : US$ 6.091 billion & regional investment 2006: Rp. 981 Billion, 2007: Rp. 5.638 trillion
- Relatively low inflation rate with regional rate in 2007 was 6.39% compared with national rate of 6.59%
- Total work force is 4.085 million with 74.9% of it ranging from 25-54 years old
- Province with highest income per capita, reflecting the great opportunities (Regional Income per capita 2007 was 64.11 million while national was 17.6 million)
- Regional budget/APBD of DKI Jakarta (2005 = 13.48 trillion; 2006 = 17.99 trillion and APBN = 647 trillion)
- Jakarta is the biggest contributor to GDP in Indonesia, at + 19%
INFRASTRUCTURE
- Toll Road
The increasing mobility of people and cargo transportation to and from Jakarta have prompted the construction of toll road connecting industrial estates to the business and commercial centers across the city. The rising number of vehicles reaching the volume of 14% per annum cannot be matched by the road construction which grows at only at 5% per annum.
The toll road that is funded largely by the toll tariff charge offers a huge potential as the major arteries of road system used by a large majority of drivers and public transportation. Limited by the size of the state budget, the government has proposed the concession of BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) for investors, a lucrative deal for investor with large revenues in the end, generated by the sheer volumes of the traffic.
- Power Plant
As the bustling city throbbing with the pulse of development Jakarta consumes a huge amount of electricity. Up to December 2000, the installed electricty capacity has reached 16,720,335 MwH with the number of consumers reaching 2,549,334. The electricity in Jakarta today is supplied by gas-fired, diesel, and steam-powered power plants, providing 1,297 Mw of power, with the main supplier being the Java- Bali power plants.
Given the ever -increasing demand for electricity, Jakarta offers large opportunities for the development of power plants, especially after the fuel hike that forces household and industries to seek new electricity source.
PUBLIC SERVICES
- Water Treatment
The development of water supply system for the city of Jakarta has always been a major source of concern with only 57% of the whole population has access to clean water supply. Such large part of population remain deprived of clean water and investors are welcome to invest in water treatment process.
In terms of clean water and waste water management, Jakarta needs one management concept to be able to deliver results. To avoid contamination and to preserve the volume of water, the system needs to be conducted in the closed system, instead of the open system currently used by the Jatiluhur dam that proves to be inefficient. - Waste Management
As described by a research in 2007, the daily waste product in Jakarta amounts to 6,000 tons, consisting of 65% organic waste and 35% non organic waste. Jakarta currently has no water treatment management, with 5,000 tons of the waste being simply dumped into the Garbage Disposal Location in Bantar Gebang of Bekasi. Waste Management has therefore in dire needs of investment and with the growing population of the metropolitan this demand will soon need to be adressed properly. - Bus Priority System
Being the first of four transportation systems to achieve enormous success, since 15 January 2004, Trans Jakarta has operated its first corridor line of busway from Blok M to Kota, covering the length of 12,9 km. The bus priority system (busway) is running altogether up to 159 km, with the final phase of construction consisting of a total 15 corridors completed by the year 2010.
PROPERTY
- Kawasan Berikat Nusantara (KBN) / Nusantara Bonded Zone
Established in 1986, the KBN has been accommodating more than 140 Investors at Cakung and Tanjung Priok areas. Since 1999, the management has decided to develop Marunda as newest Export Processing Zone with a perfect plan and better services. PT. (Persero) Kawasan Berikat Nusantara has three operating Export Processing Zones, all within the capital city of Jakarta, located near the Tanjung Priok Port and only 15 minutes away from Soekarno-Hatta International airport.
The Marunda area, covering an area of 413,8 hectares is located on the northern coastal area of Jakarta, approximately 4 km east of Tanjung Priok Port. Consisting of 118 hectare of bonded zone, and 287,2 hectare as non bonded zone and the remaining 8,6 as bird conservation area, it has 7 treatment/ producers in operation (with 6 of them being foreign companies) and 12 non treatment companies. - Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JIEP)
PT (Persero) Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (PT JIEP) is a State-owned Enterprise with the equity held by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, each representing 50% of the total shares. PT JIEP develops and manages Pulogadung Industrial Estate with total area of approximately 500 Ha. The first industrial estate in Indonesia, it provides major products and services, Land Parcel to be sold as well as, Standard Factory Building (SFB) , Small Scale Industry Facilities (SSIF), and Warehouse and Office Building to be leased.
PT JIEP also develops and manages Gading Griya Lestatri real estate, located in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta Utara and owns the majority shares of a construction service company called PT JIEP Jaya. Formally established as legal entity on June 26, 1973 to continue the activities Industrial Estate Project owned by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, PT JIEP currently employs 106 employees to serve 460 foreign and local investors/tenants.
TOURISM
- The Development of Ancol As a Tourist Destination
The number of foreign visitors to Jakarta in April 2008 has been recorded at 111.153 and hotel occupancy rate as of March 2008 recorded at 52.03 % all attested to Jakarta’s attraction as a destination. With its highly concentrated markets, growing foreign investments and the significantly improved security, statistics showed that 51.56% visitors are visiting Jakarta for business purposes.
Ancol as the only largely developed coastal area for recreation in Jakarta will also raise its profile being the destination for both domestic and foreign visitors. Such strategic advantage of Ancol as a destination will attract investment not only for the Ancol area but the surrounding areas as well that boasts a vista to the waterfront of Jakarta. - The Development of the Ragunan Zoo
One of the main destination for animal lovers interested to see the tropical faunas in captivity, the Ragunan Zoo offers another type of tourism attraction. With 260 species that includes the rare species on the verge of extinction, the Ragunan Zoo houses 3122 animals, including many different types of birds that have become a major source of attraction.
Given the strategic location and the large number of its animal collection, the Ragunan Zoo is actually an asset for Jakarta. Investment in one of Jakarta’s icon of destination is needed to restore the zoo to its former revered reputation as a place where public can learn a lot about nature and its inhabitants.
